Beads to Father Lawrence
Eleanor presenting Prayer beads to Fr. Lawrence Freeman O.B.S.
and His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Prayer beads are universal. The word is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "bidden"(to pray) and "bede" (prayer). They use of beads to support prayer appears to have originated with the Hindus in India (185 BC to AD 320) Today two-thirds of the world population utilizes some form of prayer beads. The circular form of prayer beads has different levels of religious and psychological meanings. In meditation, the circle draws the mind into contemplation: one uses prayer beads, ringing oneself in, thus concentrating energy. My meditation practice has led me to create Contemporary Prayer Beads to be used by all people seeking the Divine. The beads vary in shape, color, texture, and size to symbolize our emotional, mental, and physical states. Wearing and holding the beads serve as a tactile reminder of where we are each moment...Allowing us to contemplate our response to what IS.

The Prayer Beads are made from ancient and contemporary beads. Each set is a one of a kind creation. The beads can be worn as a shawl, a choker , a belt or a necklace. Contemporary prayer beads, created by Eleanor Wiley, have been given to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Father Lawrence Freeman,0.B.S., Jean Houston, Ram Dass, Houston Smith, Larry Dossey, M.D., Nelson Mandela, Brother Wayne Teasdale, Oprah Winfrey, Rachael Naomi Remen, M.D. and many other wonderful people.
